Somalia: Al-Shabab kills father of Military Court Chief

Unidentified airstrike targeted suspected Al-Shabaab militant on a minibus near Bariiri location about 45 kilometers south of the capital Mogadishu on Tuesday, officials said on Wednesday.

According to prior TUKO.co.ke reports, this attack came days after the Kenya Defense Forces killed five al Shabaab militants who were among a group of attackers on the Ijara Police camp.

The U.S. military said that, in addition to the militant deaths, a “vehicle-borne improvised explosive device” had been destroyed in the strike. This is the latest such incident in a series that have happened in the recent past.

The command said, in a statement, that no civilian was killed in the attack.

Last month, Washington warned of a threat to its diplomatic staff in Mogadishu and directed all non-essential staff to leave the city.

On October 14, a double truck bombing killed 512 people in Mogadishu, prompting thousands of nationals to take to the streets to protest against the terrorist group Al Shabab, created in 2006.

The U.S. military carried out more than 30 drone strikes a year ago against al-Shabab and fighters linked to the Islamic State group after the Trump administration approved expanded operations in the Horn of Africa nation.

The US has supported the AU force that has driven Al Shabaab out of Mogadishu and other towns since 2011.

The Sunni fundamentalists have for years fought for dominance in Somalia and want to create an Islamist state in the Horn of Africa country.
