‘My hijab kept shrinking’: Halima Aden on ‘exploitative’ fashion industry

Halima Aden, who was the first model to wear a burkini, has opened up to designer Tommy Hilfiger about her experience of the fashion industry as a Muslim model.

Former Somali-American fashion model Halima Aden opened up about the exploitative fashion industry in an interview with fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger via BBC News on 22 July.

Halima Aden was the industry’s first hijab-wearing supermodel who sent shock waves to fans and followers when she quit modelling in November 2020 saying that the industry is incompatible with her Muslim religion.

HALIMA ADEN: ‘MY HIJAB KEPT SHRINKING’

In an interview with American fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, Aden opened up about how her hijab kept shrinking in size once she trusted the team to style her, placing her so far away from her own image.

“The last two years, I trusted the team on set to do my hijab and that’s when I ran into problems like jeans being placed on my head in place of a regular scarf. The way they styled it, I was so far removed from my own image. My hijab kept shrinking and got smaller and smaller with each shoot,” said Aden.

Tommy Hilfiger agreed with Aden saying that it was a “flaw” in the industry and encouraged her to be proud of herself for sticking to her beliefs.
