Doctors down tools in Mogadishu

Mogadishu – Doctors and nurses at an Austrian-funded maternity and paediatric hospital in the Somali capital went on strike on Monday after one of the doctors was kidnapped, a local medical officer said.

Doctor Said Ahmed Kutub of the SOS Kinderdorf hospital was picked by gunmen in the Huriwa district of south Mogadishu on Sunday and taken away to an unknown destination.

“Unless the abductors release Kutub, the hospital will not be operational. Medical personnel can’t work under permanent threats,” a nurse who asked not to be named said.

Other doctors also demanded the immediate release of Kutub.

The hospital, which is the best in Mogadishu, meets the needs of some 300 children and women, but on Monday out-patients were turned away due to the strike. – Sapa-AFP
