Police shoot a Somali man allegedly wielding hammer in Melbourne home

A man has been shot by police after allegedly threatening them with a hammer this morning in the Melbourne suburb of Meadow Heights.

Police were executing a search warrant at a home on Mitchell Crescent when the occupant allegedly threatened them with a hammer.

Police said they used capsicum spray but the man was still out of control, posing a threat.

That’s when a detective sergeant shot the 30-year-old in the groin, before the offender was sprayed again.

“To utilise capsicum spray, then a firearm, it was a lethal situation and fortunately police haven’t been injured,” Det. Supt Paul O’Halloran said.

He suffered a non-life-threatening injury when police shot him in the lower body.

The search warrant was connected to the armed robbery of a service station in Coolaroo on Wednesday.

Detectives from the Armed Crime Squad will investigate the shooting with oversight from the Professional Standards Command.
