HOW TO REDUCE FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE SCARCITY FOOD, WATER, AND DROUGHT IN SOMALIA

Over two decades of conflict have left 1.1 million Somalis displaced in their own country, and almost a million as refugees in neighbouring countries. High food prices, combined with frequent droughts and floods have compounded poverty and continue to threaten livelihoods. ‘Reliefweb’.

* •    Good government and governance should be in place, and stricter government policies
* •    Restore security and stability of the country which is the backbone of development
* •    Explore natural resources of the country and stop depending on international handouts
* •    Clear road blockages and repair worn out roads
* •    Stop deforestation and enforce the law of banning of charcoal exportation to overseas
* •    Introduce renewal energy (Solar and wind energy) to minimize firewood and charcoal usage
* •    Improvement of skills and knowledge of farmers and empowering them is extremely vital
* •    Farmers should be encouraged to grow cereals (Maize, sorghum, beans, etc) instead of sesame seed, fruits, etc
* •    Planting more trees and combating deforestation and erosion
* •    Government should provide social infrastructure (health clinics, and education) to farmers
* •    Introduce and encourage community participation and capacity building programs
* •    Repair water catchments and introduce pore wells and water reservoirs
* •    Harvesting rainwater at most appropriate ways
* •    Introduce alternative methods of irrigation systems
* •    Governments should provide support and assistance to farmers
* •    International communities should provide support and assistance to farmers
* •    Establish a network or forum for farmers to address their problems and issues
* •    Initiate water distribution system in the two rivers (Shabeele and Juba)
* •    Present modern storage facilities for crops such as silos
* •    Familiarise to grow grasses (Alfa-alfa, Sudan grass, lablab, etc.)  
* •    Introduce modern storage facilities for forage and animal feeds to use during the dry seasons
* •    Revive range management agency and ranches
* •    Introduce research and study centres
* •    International organisations should stop providing cheap incentives/handouts to Internal Displaced People (IDP)
* •    Introduce repartition programs for Internal Displaced People (IDP)

FISHING
* •    Enhance the skills and knowledge of fishers
* •    Government and International organisations should support and assist, and provide modern equipment and facilities to fishers such as cold stores, and good market
* •    International communities should stop fishing illegally, and marine pollution at Somalia waters
* •    Government should seek an international for market for fish production
* •    Encourage and empower local communities to consume fish meat and sea foods
* •    Government should place rules and regulations for fishing, and stricter government policies
* •    The government should construct fish and see food factories in different locations for export to overseas
